Disney+ and Marvel Studios are developing Spider-Man: Freshman Year, an animated prequel series that will take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The animated series will follow Peter Parker in his early days as Spider-Man, suggesting that the show will take place before his debut in Captain America: Civil War and explore his comic book origin story, something that the movies have only hinted at so far. The animation for the series will also "celebrates the character’s early comic book roots."

It is unclear if Tom Holland, who portrays the Web-Slinger in the live-action MCU films and voiced the character in the first season of What If...?, will reprise his role for this series. The only name attached to the project, which does not have a release date, is Jeff Trammel, who will serve as head writer.

The announcement came on Disney+ Day, the two-year anniversary celebration of the House of Mouse's streaming service. Marvel has had a strong presence during the festivities, announcing the new animated series X-Men '97 and Marvel Zombies. It also debuted new logos for She-Hulk, Ironheart, Echo, Secret Invasion and Agatha: House of Harkness.

Meanwhile, on Disney+ itself, subscribers can now watch Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for the first time, as well as 13 Marvel Studios titles in IMAX, including Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, Black Panther, Black Widow, Captain America: Civil War, Captain Marvel, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Iron Man, Thor: Ragnarok and Shang-Chi. Marvel also debuted a new special, which features new looks at She-Hulk and Moon Knight.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year, X-Men '97 and Marvel Zombies follow What If...?, the studio's first foray into animation. Marvel heavyweight Victoria Alonso is currently heading a mini-studio within Marvel that is focusing on animated projects. One of those projects would have been a spinoff of What If...? following Star-Lord T'Challa. However, that project was scrapped with the passing of Chadwick Boseman.

Spider-Man fans will most likely have to wait a while before Freshman Year streams. However, Peter Parker will return to the big screen with Spider-Man: No Way Home on Dec. 17.
